The concrete cutters came today and cut out two windows in our basement. The wall was 6 inches thick on the top and 10 inches on the bottom – with a 6 inch dogleg (see pics below). We also had them cut out two 2 x 2 holes in the foundation where I’m going to set the poles supporting the beam we put in (the beam is replacing a load bearing wall)

You can see the north facing window to the right with the hole in the foundation on the left. If you look in the left top corner, you can see the new beam we installed. The area in the middle of the picture will become a guest bedroom with the window inside the room.

You can see the dogleg or step better here. It seems that the house was poured right on top of the ground with no footer. The basement was probably dug out later – by hand.
